St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Waconia, Minnesota

St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery is a small cemetery with over 2000 graves, the oldest of which is from 1857. There aren’t many large or ornate markers, but there are still some interesting ones.

Georg Fischer 1817-1898

The grave of Georg Fischer is marked by this Woodmen of the World marker. These markers are uncommon, but once you’ve seen one you start to see them everywhere. Many times they mark the graves of young people whose lives have been cut short, thus the tree motif. But not always, as in the case of this man who died at the age of 81.

Woodmen of the World is an insurance company that got its start in 1890 and still exists to this day. Part of their policies was the option to have grave marker provided upon death. I don’t know whether they still offer that perk. Somehow I doubt it.

Closer detail

The inscription translate roughly as, “Born Jan 4, 1817 in Bavaria, Germany, died probably with the HL sacraments on Feb 7, 1898 rest in peace.” At least according to Google Translate.

Family Grave

I took this picture all because of the name Krescentia Dircks. How many people have you ever met with the name Krescentia?
