Cemetery Crawling

I’ve always been fascinated by cemeteries. There is so much history in the stones and memorials we erect for our dead.

There are stories buried there, family histories, lives long lived, and lives tragically cut short. And the ways in which we memorialize those who have passed can run from extravagant pillars and statuary to simple, humble markers.

From Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to Des Moines, Iowa I’m sure I’ve visited well over 100 cemeteries in the past few years, and I try to include a crawl in any travel plans I have. I’ve seen small family plots with only two graves, and I’ve seen giant, sprawling cities of the dead with thousands of graves. They all have something to offer.

They’re also great places to take pictures. Which is why I am creating a series of posts documenting places I’ve visited in the past several years.

An invaluable aid to my hobby is the website Find a Grave, that has listings for literally thousands of cemeteries, and millions of graves.

You can find posts about my visits right here.
