Homemade Rice-a-Roni

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Orzo Pasta

  • 3/4 cup White Rice

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 2 cups chicken stock or broth

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon tumeric

  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Directions

  • Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat
  • Add pasta and rice, and saute until the pasta starts to turn golden
  • Pour in chicken stock
  • Stir in the salt, tumeric, onion powder, garlic powder, and parsley.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and let cook for 13-15 minutes, or until rice and pasta are tender, and all the liquid has been absorbed.
  • Turn off heat, and let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

    Jon wants to know why do you use unsalted butter but then add salt to the recipe? Also we’re drinking your coffee while listening to your song.

    • I have been using unsalted butter for well over 15 years now because I want to be in control of the amount of salt in my cooking. I also switched to kosher salt many years back, at first because it was the “foodie” thing to do, but now I find that I can taste the iodine in iodized salt.
