Tone selection key, tone qualities and pedal drawbar combinations

1. Upper Manual

The qualities and intensities of upper manual tone selection key tones are listed below with the names of identifying keys. A satisfactory pedal drawbar combination for use with each key also is included in the tabulation.

D Salicional Soft string tone very useful for all soft effects and for music intended to be played by the softer string-toned stops of conventional pipe organs. p 3 1
D# Oboe Excellent for plaintive solo melodies as well as for orchestral parts. It is frequently accompanied by a dulciana tone on the lower manual. Use only small degree of tremulant. mp 3 2
E Flute and strings A moderately soft tone having a wide range of usage for quiet passages. The tremolant is effective with this preset key. mp 4 2
F Orchestral strings A keen string tone useful for both organ and orchestral music as well as string ensemble parts and violin solo effects. The chorus control (see par. 4a (6) can be used to advantage with this preset key. mp 4 2
F# French horn A fine solo tone of moderate strength, especially suitable for quiet passages played by grass instruments in orchestral works. mf 4 2
G Swell (no reeds) A fairly rich organ tone of moderate volume, excellent for accompanying choir singing. It provides a pleasing contrast with the great preset key of the lower manual. f 5 3
G# Trumpet The strongest solo voice of the presets. It may also be used for brass effects. f 5 3
A Full swell A full, rich tone contrasting in character to that of the great preset key of the lower manual. Used sparingly, the chorus control is very effective with this tone quality. ff 6 4
A# A switch for connecting the left group of the drawbars for the upper manual.
B A switch for connecting the right group of the drawbars for the upper manual.

2. Lower Manual

Qualities and intensities of tone selection key tones on the lower manual are listed below with the names of indentifying keys and a satisfactory pedal drawbar combination for use with each.

C# Solo gamba A strong string tone of cello-like quality. As a solo voice it is improved by an accompaniment using the salicional, solo flute, or flute and strings of the upper manual. The richness of the solo gamba tone is suited for solo passages in the middle and lower registers. mp 5 2
D Dulciana Suitable for all soft effects or as an accompaniment for solos. It is frequently used with the solo flute, oboe, flute and strings, or orchestral strings of the upper manual. p 3 1
D# Concert flute Effective as a solo voice. The salicional of the upper manual provides it with an excellent accompaniment. mp 3 2
E Flute A moderately soft flute tone useful for playing passages requiring moderate volume. It is suitable as accompaniment for the trumpet tone on the upper manual when only a moderately strong accompaniment is desired. mp 3 2
F Diapason and flutes A medium organ tone useful in playing passages when moderate volume is required. It is suitable as accompaniment for the trumpet tone of the upper manual awhen a strong accompaniment is desired. mf 4 2
F# Clarinet A smooth solo voice suitable for both organ and orchestral music. It is also suitable for woodwind accompaniment of other solos voices. mf 4 2
G Diapason chorus A full, pure organ tone used for all purposes where a comparitively strong tone is required for contrast with orchestral strings or swell preset keys of the upper manual. The accompaniment for an entire church service may be satisfactorily played on this one preset. f 5 3
G# Full organ One step stronger than the great tone. It is the strongest preset of the organ and should be reserved for special effects where full tonal resources are required. fff 8 6
A Great (no reeds) The strongest tone that will customarily be needed. The chorus control adds great brilliance to its full tone. ff 7 4
