Zumbrota, Minnesota

This may be where my hobby started. We were in Zumbrota to play a gig, as we always are when we’re there, and we went for a walk along the Zumbro River until we stumbled upon St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery, a small plot with only 159 graves dating back to 1912, and the adjacent Zumbrota Cemetery, a larger parcel with 3,400+ graves dating to 1843.

For the first time I noticed what I later learned were very common motifs on the stones, such as weeping willow trees, hands clasped together, hands with fingers pointed heavenward, doves, drapery, etc. We also found a few Civil War vets.

It was after visiting here in October of 2019 that I started going to cemeteries on purpose to witness the history, and find some of the stories of the people buried there.
